Predictors of adverse outcome in uterine smooth muscle tumours of uncertain malignant potential (STUMP): A clinicopathological analysis of 22 cases with a proposal for the inclusion of additional histological parameters
Histopathology Jun 29, 2018
Gupta M, et al. - Researchers compared the occurrence of adverse outcomes in smooth muscle tumors of uncertain malignant potential (STUMP) based on enhanced criteria and performed failure analysis to identify feature(s) that can help forecast the outcome. Between 1994 and 2009, cases of STUMP diagnosed were retrieved and follow-up data were gathered. Data reported that adverse outcomes were seen in 36.4% of cases. Findings revealed that although “significant” nuclear atypia was not discriminatory, its frequent connection with adverse outcomes has pathobiological implications. It was noted that the presence of necrosis was not particularly linked with adverse outcomes. Atypical mitoses, epithelioid differentiation, vascular involvement and infiltrative/irregular margins seemed to signal adverse outcomes. Therefore, they should be included in the diagnostic regimen.
