Predictors in routine practice of 6-min walking distance and oxygen desaturation in patients with COPD: Impact of comorbidities
International Journal of COPD Jul 05, 2019
Perez T, et al. - Among patients from the “Initiatives BPCO”, a real-life French COPD cohort, researchers assessed the predictors (obtained in routine practice) of a low 6-min walking distance (6MWD) and exercise-induced desaturation (EID) in COPD, including comorbidities. Positive association of a 6MWD <350 m with age and modified Medical Research Council, and negative association with resting oxygen saturation (SpO2) and FVC % pred were revealed in multivariate analyses, whereas no comorbidity was related to a low 6WMD. Positive association of EID with hypertension and negative link with age, obesity, FEV1% pred and resting SpO2 were also observed. In COPD, the identified determinants of 6MWD and EID were different, with a minor influence of comorbidities restricted to hypertension in EID and to obesity, which was unexpectedly related to less EID. Findings revealed a weak association of other variables such as age, routine resting lung function and SpO2, with 6MWD and EID. The prediction of 6MWT performance using routine clinical/functional parameters is difficult.
