Predictors for rapid progression of coronary calcification: An optical coherence tomography study

Journal of the American Heart Association Jan 29, 2021

Nakajima A, Araki M, Kurihara O, et al. - Researchers investigated the factors predictive of rapid progression of coronary calcification. They selected patients who underwent serial optical coherence tomography imaging at baseline as well as at 6 months. There were 187 patients who underwent serial optical coherence tomography imaging, of those, 105 patients (56.1%) had 235 calcified plaques at baseline. Following 6 months, an increase in the calcification index was noted in 95.3% of calcified plaques from 132.0 to 178.2. The identified independent predictors for rapid progression of coronary calcification were: diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, lipid‐rich plaque, and macrophages. A likely association of baseline vascular inflammation as well as of subsequent stabilization with rapid progression of calcification was also suggested.
