Predictors and colonoscopy outcomes of inadequate bowel cleansing: A 10-year experience in 28,725 patients
Annals of Gastroenterology Aug 31, 2019
Baker FA, Mari A, Nafrin S, et al. - Because inadequate bowel preparation in many patients is still the main obstacle to complete colonoscopy and requires many repeated procedures, researchers conducted this multivariate analysis to identify risk factors correlated with inadequate bowel preparation, including age, sex, setting (inpatient/outpatient), preparation regimen and procedures’ indications, and to better characterize these patients. Electronic reports of colonoscopy procedures over a 10-year period were reviewed for this investigation. Six thousand seven hundred two had inadequate bowel preparation of the 28,725 patients included in the retrospective study. In the multivariate analysis, inadequate bowel preparation was significantly linked to advanced age, male sex and a minority population. One of the most prominent factors associated with inadequate bowel preparation was the inpatient setting. Findings suggested an association of adequate bowel preparation with a higher polyp detection rate and colorectal cancer and higher frequencies of cecal and terminal ileum intubation. Various factors related to inadequate bowel preparation were described and its adverse effect on colonoscopy quality indicators was confirmed.
