Predictor factors of glycemic control in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus treated at a referral service in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Fortins RF, de Aquino Lacerda EM, Silverio RNC, et al. - In this cross-sectional study involving 120 children and adolescents [mean age was 11.74 years (± 2.88)] with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), researchers assessed the predictive factors of glycemic control by multivariate linear regression. This investigation was conducted at a referral service in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. They assessed sociodemographic, anthropometric, clinical, and dietary factors in this analysis. Data reported that the mean diabetes duration was 6.68 years and the mean HbA1c was 8.13%. Use of carbohydrate counting was linked to a 1.058% reduction in HbA1c. Findings reveal that the longer the duration of diabetes and the higher the dose of insulin used, the worse the glycemic control of T1DM among children and adolescents. The more carbohydrate counting is used, however, the better the glycemic control. This suggests that this method should be encouraged, with nutritionists providing ongoing nutritional education to ensure that carbohydrate counting is used satisfactorily, including adopting healthy eating habits, and thus the method's efficiency.
