Predictive values of preoperative tests for difficult laryngoscopy and intubation in adult patients at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital
Anesthesiology Research and Practice Apr 04, 2019
Tamire T, et al. - Among patients who had elective surgery under general anesthesia with endotracheal intubation, researchers evaluated the magnitude and predictive values of preoperative tests for difficult laryngoscopy and intubation. This investigation was performed using a facility-based cross-sectional study design. The estimated magnitude of difficult laryngoscopy and intubation was 13.6% and 5%, respectively. Difficult intubation was reported in 33.3% of cases with difficult laryngoscopy. For predicting difficult laryngoscopic intubation, good preoperative tests were Mallampati test, interincisor distance (IID), and thyromental distance (TMD), when used in combination. For routine preoperative airway assessment, the combination of modified Mallampati class (MMC)/TMD/IID was recommended to be used by anesthesia professionals.
