Predictive value of preoperative sarcopenia in patients with gastric cancer: A meta-analysis and systematic review

Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery Jul 14, 2018

Yang Z, et al. - In patients with gastric cancer, researchers assessed if preoperative sarcopenia increases the risk of poor, and new ideas for the prognosis of outcomes for these patients were discussed. They analyzed 13 studies involving 4,262 patients who underwent gastrectomy for gastric cancer (sarcopenia group = 1,234; non-sarcopenia group = 3,028). Findings revealed preoperative sarcopenia was a new indicator of poor pathological staging, impaired overall survival, and increased postoperative complications. They recommend routinely screening patients with gastric cancer aged ≥ 65 years and from Asia for sarcopenia before surgery to adequately assess the risk of postoperative complications in clinical practice.
