Predictive role of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) from diffusion-weighted MRI in patients with sacral chordoma treated with carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT) alone

Preda L, Casale S, Fanizza M, et al. - This study intended to investigate whether baseline ADC from DWI sequences could predict response to treatment in patients with sacral chordoma not suitable for surgery treated with carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT) alone compared with volume changes. Researchers recruited a total of 59 individuals with sacral chordoma not suitable for surgery who underwent one cycle of CIRT alone and a minimum of 12-months follow-up. The lesion volume was obtained for each MRI and median, kurtosis, and skewness ADC were examined within the whole lesion volume. They applied volume changes between baseline and the last available follow-up to classify individuals with partial response, the progression of the disease and stable disease (PR, PD, and SD). Preliminary outcomes imply that baseline ADC could prognosticate response to treatment with CIRT, particularly to detect potential non-responder individuals.
