Predictive preoperative and intraoperative factors of anastomotic leak in gastrectomy patients
American Journal of Surgery Jan 08, 2020
Palmer P, et al. - Researchers sought for the preoperative and intraoperative factors that may assist in predicting a higher risk of anastomotic/staple line leak for gastric cancer patients. From a single prospective database, they assessed 195 patients who underwent surgery with curative intent for gastric malignancies between 2002 and 2018; an overall complication rate of 40% was reported. These patients exhibited decreased survival in correlation to the presence of postoperative complications. Significant risk factors affecting postoperative complications included the number of comorbidities (≥ 2) and operation type (Total vs Distal). They suggest optimizing these patients post-operatively with limited anastomotic stress and enteral feeding tube in order to achieve a less complicated course in these patients.
