Predictive performance of PlGF (placental growth factor) for screening preeclampsia in asymptomatic women
Hypertension Nov 04, 2019
Agrawal S, et al. - By analyzing 40 studies involving 3,189 cases of preeclampsia and 89,498 controls, researchers evaluated the predictive accuracy of PlGF (placental growth factor) for screening preeclampsia in asymptomatic women. The test yielded an overall predictive odds ratio of 9 (6–13). In subgroup analysis assessing different PlGF thresholds, the highest predictive values were noted for PlGF levels between 80 and 120 pg/mL, with a high predictive odds ratio of 25 (7–88), and a sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, and negative likelihood ratio of 0.78, 0.88, 6.3, and 0.26, respectively. In addition, performing test following 14 weeks of gestation and for prediction of early-onset preeclampsia was related to higher accuracy. Based on the findings, experts concluded the usefulness of PlGF as a screening tool to predict preeclampsia but exercising caution is recommended when judging its utility.
