Predictive performance of blood urea nitrogen to serum albumin ratio in elderly patients with gastrointestinal bleeding
The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Dec 23, 2020
Bae SJ, et al. - Since acute gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding is one of the most significant and the frequent causes of patients attending the emergency department, researchers sought to assess the prognostic performance of the blood urea nitrogen to serum albumin ratio (B/A ratio) compared with the AIMS65 score tool in elderly patients with GI bleeding. The sample consisted of patients with GI bleeding in the institution from February 2018 through May 2020. In the 596 patients included in the report, of which 188 (31.5%) were admitted to the ICU and 36 (6.0%) died during hospitalization. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the B/A ratio was significant predictors of ICU admission and in-hospital mortality. In addition, the B/A ratio in ICU admission patients and non-survivors was significantly higher. According to this retrospective cohort study, the B/A ratio is as simple and useful as the AIMS65 score for predicting outcomes for elderly GI bleeding patients.
