Predictive markers of long-term recurrence in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps
American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Feb 15, 2020
Rosati D, Rosato C, Pagliuca G, et al. - In this prospective study, researchers sought to examine the inflammatory profile in individuals (n = 44) with long term recurrent and non-recurrent CRSwNPs and whether a specific profile is correlated with recurrence, contrasting eosinophilic, neutrophilic and lymphocytic infiltration, as well as IL-5 and IL-8 expression to long term recurrence rate. The sample consisted of adult patients with CRSwNP treated with endoscopic sinus surgery between 2008 and 2010. According to findings, high eosinophilic infiltration and high IL-5 expression in CRSwNP correlate with a higher rate of long term recurrence, on the other hand, neutrophilic and lymphocytic infiltration, and IL-8 expression don't correlate with it. Such results provide an opportunity to improve the ability to predict the surgical intervention prognosis, although the ideal outcome predictor in CRSwNP still needs to be explored.
