Predictive markers of long-term recurrence in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps
American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Nov 29, 2019
Davide R, Chiara R, Giulio P, et al. - By performing this prospective analysis, researchers focused on the inflammatory profile in patients with long term recurrent and non-recurrent chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNPs), and determined whether a particular profile is related to recurrence, comparing eosinophilic, neutrophilic and lymphocytic infiltration, and IL-5 (interleukin-5) and IL-8 (interleukin-8) expression to long term recurrence rate. Overall 44 adult patients with CRSwNP managed with endoscopic sinus surgery were included. In CRSwNP, a correlation of high eosinophilic infiltration and high IL-5 expression with higher rate of long term recurrence was observed in this study, while there was no correlation of neutrophilic and lymphocytic infiltration, and IL-8 expression, with it. These data offer the opportunity to enhance the ability to foretell the prognosis of surgical intervention, although the need for the search of the optimal predictor of outcome in CRSwNP was still realized.
