Predictive factors of radioiodine therapy failure in Graves’ disease: A meta-analysis

American Journal of Surgery Apr 19, 2021

Shalaby M, Hadedeya D, Toraih EA, et al. - Since I-131 therapy is a common treatment modality for adults with Graves’ disease (GD), researchers conducted this meta-analysis to investigate patient-specific factors that predict I-131 therapy failure. Four thousand eight hundred twenty-two collective patients across 18 studies were included. The risk of I-131 therapy failure was increased by male sex, I-131 therapy 6 months after GD diagnosis and history of anti-thyroid drugs. In addition, elevated free thyroxine, 24-h radioactive iodine uptake scan ≥ 60.26% and thyroid volume ≥ 35.77 mL were linked to failure. The risk of I-131 therapy failure in GD can be predicted by patient characteristics. For certain patients, definitive surgical treatment could be a viable choice.
