Obesity Surgery Mar 20, 2021
Guetter CR, Ivano VK, Pintan RV, et al. - Researchers conducted this cross-sectional study to assess predictors of symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) following sleeve gastrectomy (SG) based on a clinical questionnaire. Between May 2013 and March 2017, all patients who underwent open SG in a single institution were included. Participants in the study were 189 patients, mean age 39.7 ± 10.71 years and 45.5% were female, and they were were categorized into three study groups by GERDq score: asymptomatic (GERDq = 0), mildly symptomatic (GERDq ≤ 8), and severely symptomatic; there were 64 patients were asymptomatic, 63 were mildly symptomatic, and 62 were severely symptomatic. Ultimately, no variables were statistically or clinically predictive of the occurrence or severity of GERD after SG. More research is needed to fully understand the complex pathophysiology of GERD.
