Predictive factors for gastrostomy at time of diagnosis and impact on survival in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
Clinical Nutrition Feb 06, 2020
Vergonjeanne M, Fayemendy P, Marin B, et al. - Since the effect of gastrostomy on the survival of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients was unclear, researchers reported diagnosis factors correlated with the indication for gastrostomy and assessed survival of ALS patients with gastrostomy indication according to their acceptance of feeding tube placement. Between 2006 and 2017, ALS patients were included and followed in the ALS referral centre of Limoges’s teaching hospital. Using Mann-Whitney test, Chi2 tests, Cox model and multivariate logistic regression, statistical analysis was conducted. Participants in the study were 285 patients. Bulbar onset, a loss of one point in the BMI or on the bulbar functional scale were all positively linked to indication for gastrostomy at the time of diagnosis. Gastrostomy placement, however, had no effect on survival. At diagnosis, an indication for gastrostomy was associated with both the neurological and nutritional criteria.
