Predictive factors and prognostic value for status epilepticus in newborns
European Journal of Paediatric Neurology Feb 03, 2019
Gokce-Samar Z, et al. - In this retrospective single-center study, researchers assessed factors that could predict status epilepticus (SE) in neonates and prognostic factors for patient outcomes in newborns suffering either isolated seizures or SE. SE was defined as a single seizure lasting more than 15 minutes or repeated seizures without return to preictal neurological baseline for more than 15 minutes. Study participants included 91 newborns who had neonatal seizures from January 2010 to December 2014. The data presented showed a severely abnormal initial neurological examination and hypoglycemia were the identified risk factors for SE. The only positive prognostic factor was a normal postictal clinical examination in newborns with isolated seizures.
