Predictive factors and outcomes of successful thoracoscopic lung resection in pediatric patients
Journal of American College of Surgeons Jan 07, 2021
Clark RA, Perez EA, Chung DH, et al. - In this single-center, retrospective chart review, researchers identified predictive factors leading to safe and efficient thoracoscopic lung resections. The sample consisted of patients (< 18 yrs) who underwent lung resection between June 2009 to July 2020. Pulmonary wedge resections have been excluded. Ninety-six patients have been identified. For pediatric lung resections, thoracoscopy has become a standard approach. The results show that the successful completion of the thoracoscopic method may be predicted by age < 1 and the absence of active respiratory infections and preoperative symptoms. With regard to blood loss and opioid requirements, length of stay and chest tube length, thoracoscopy provides major advantages over traditional open thoracotomy.
