Prediction of biochemical cure in patients with medullary thyroid cancer
British Journal of Surgery Mar 12, 2020
Machens A, et al. - Researchers aimed at assessing the influence of the number of node metastases vs metastatic lymph node ratio vs AJCC node category on biochemical cure in medullary thyroid cancer (MTC). Using multivariable logistic regression analysis, they determined clinical and histopathological variables that contribute to biochemical cure in node-positive MTC. Systematic lymph node dissections were performed in some 584 of 1,026 patients with MTC for node-positive disease; the biochemical cure was reported in 27·4% (54 of 197) after the initial operation and in 13·5% (42 of 310 patients) after repeat surgery. The likelihood of biochemical cure after initial and repeat surgery for node-positive MTC was determined by the number of lymph node metastases, unlike metastatic lymph node ratio or AJCC node category.
