Prediction of aspiration in dysphagia using logistic regression: Oral intake and self-evaluation
European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology Oct 28, 2019
Heijnen BJ, et al. - Among 111 patients with oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) using oral intake status and commonly used self-evaluation questionnaires on functional health status and health-related quality of life (HR-QoL), researchers developed a predictive model that could forecast aspiration. This research comprised a consecutive series of OD patients during their first visit to the outpatient clinic of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery of the Leiden University Medical Centre. Construction of receiver operating characteristics curves and computing areas under the curve evaluated the performance of the resulting model. This investigation demonstrates that a cost-effective, simple and non-invasive assessment procedure, including oral intake status and patient self-evaluation questionnaires on functional health status and HR-QoL, can predict aspiration in patients with OD. A predictive model was developed at an outpatient clinic of a tertiary care centre using data from a consecutive series of patients. This model may be used in patients with OD to predict aspiration.
