Predicting stroke and death in patients with heart failure using CHA2DS2-VASc score in Asia
BMC Cardiovascular Disorders Aug 15, 2019
Son MK, et al. - In Asian patients with heart failure (HF), researchers assessed the ability of the CHA2DS2-VASc score to predict 1 and 2 year risks of stroke and death. Excluded cases included patients with a history of cancer prior to hospitalization for HF. In this prospective observational multicenter cohort study, findings revealed a significant association of CHA2DS2-VASc score with the risks of stroke and death among patients with incident HF with and without atrial fibrillation. However, stroke and death were only modestly predicted by CHA2DS2-VASc score, suggesting a requirement for investigations assessing modified CHA2DS2-VASc scores. The occurrence of most strokes were reported relatively quickly following hospitalization for HF and high mortality rates were seen in patients with HF. Based on these findings, the necessity of early treatment post-HF to prevent stroke was highlighted.
