Predicting prolonged length of stay after endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery for pituitary adenoma
International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology May 07, 2020
Vimawala S, Chitguppi C, Reilly E, et al. - Researchers sought the predictors for prolonged hospitalization in the setting of endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery (ETS) for pituitary adenomas via performing a retrospective chart review on 658 patients (average age: 54 years) who underwent ETS for pituitary adenoma at a single tertiary care academic center from 2005 to 2019. For these patients, an intraoperative cerebrospinal fluid leak or preoperative use of continuous positive airway pressure were predictive of prolonged length of stay (duration between date of surgery to date of discharge > 4 days). Prolonged length of stay was also observed in correlation with postoperative cerebrospinal fluid leak (10 of 72), management of diabetes insipidus or hypopituitarism (15 of 72), or reoperation due to surgical or medical complications (14 of 72).
