Predicting clinical progression in multiple sclerosis after six and twelve years
European Journal of Neurology Jan 17, 2019
Dekker I, et al. - Using early clinical and imaging measures, researchers predicted disability and cognition in multiple sclerosis (MS) after 6 and 12 years. A total of 115 patients with MS were selected and followed up after 2 and 6 years, and 79 were followed up after 12 years. Using the expanded disability status scale (EDSS), disability was measured. Findings revealed that patients with early signs of neurodegeneration and a progressive disease onset are more likely to develop both cognitive dysfunction and disability progression. They found that male sex and lower levels of education only affect cognitive dysfunction, which is difficult to predict and probably requires more advanced imaging.
