Predicting cardiac arrests in pediatric intensive care units
Resuscitation Sep 28, 2018
Pollack MM, et al. - Researchers sought to create and evaluate a prognostic pediatric model for cardiopulmonary arrest using data from PICU patients from eight institutions including severity of illness, cardiac arrest, and outcomes. Univariate analysis revealed that patients with cardiac arrest before admission had over 6 times the likelihood of having a subsequent arrest; those with cardiac arrests during the first 4 hours had an over 50 times higher likelihood of having a subsequent arrest. Admission from an inpatient unit and cardiac arrest in the first 4 hours were the factors with the highest odds ratios for having a cardiac arrest in the multivariable model. Children having an arrest during hours >4 to 12 were noted to be at highest average risk predicted by the model and the risk remained high for days after the risk assessment period The average predicted risk was 9.5% for arrests that happened after eight PICU days.
