Prediagnostic circulating levels of sex hormones and survival in esophageal adenocarcinoma
International Journal of Cancer Sep 27, 2020
Xie SH, Ness‐Jensen E, Langseth H, et al. - Researchers undertook this population‐based cohort study to examine the links between prediagnostic sex hormone concentrations and survival in esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC). Participants were 244 male EAC patients from the Janus Serum Bank Cohort in Norway. These patients were observed through 2018. Using serum samples, 12 sex hormone measures were assessed. Reduced disease‐specific mortality was suggested by higher concentrations of sex hormone‐binding globulin (SHBG). Such links remained in nonoperated patients, but not in operated patients, as revealed in stratified analyses by surgery. According to the findings, an increased survival in EAC may be seen in relation to higher endogenous levels of SHBG and lower levels of follicle‐stimulating hormone. It was also indicated that survival may not be impacted by the other 10 examined sex hormone measures.
