Pre-operative fluid bolus for improved haemodynamic stability during minor surgery: A prospectively randomized clinical trial

Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Jun 14, 2018

Kratz T, et al. - Researchers hypothesized that a predefined fluid bolus given prior to general anaesthesia for minor surgery would increase haemodynamic stability during anaesthetic induction. To test this hypothesis, they assessed the incidence of haemodynamic instability among healthy adult patients requiring minor surgery who were randomized to receive an additional fluid bolus of 8 mL/kg Ringer's acetate solution before the induction of anaesthesia (the intervention group). They found a reduced incidence of haemodynamic instability during induction of general anaesthesia in cases where a fluid bolus prior to anaesthesia was administered. In the intervention group vs the control group (1370 ± 439 mL vs 1219 ± 483 mL, P = .007), slightly greater total fluid volume was reported. Overall, in patients undergoing general anaesthesia, a defined fluid bolus can help stabilizing haemodynamics.
