Pre-exposure prophylaxis access in federally qualified health centers across 11 United States metropolitan statistical areas
International Journal of STD & AIDS Jul 26, 2019
Tookes H, et al. - The availability of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) at federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) in the US was examined. The south comprised Atlanta, Dallas, District of Columbia, Houston, and Miami while Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, and San Francisco were included as reference metropolitan statistical areas. Researchers randomly selected 360 FQHCs in the 11 largest US metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) for phone calls in which the availability of PrEP for HIV prevention at each center was investigated. Generally, a low percentage of FQHCs were providing PrEP within this sample, as 0–28.0% in the southern area and 14.0–33.3% in reference metropolitan areas offered PrEP services. In all metropolitan areas, FQHCs provided limited access to PrEP. Benefits could be achieved via interventions, including technical assistance to enhance PrEP availability in these settings catering to underserved populations.
