Pre-emptive caudal epidural analgesia with ropivacaine for lumbosacral spine surgery: A randomized case control study
Journal of Anaesthesiology Clinical Pharmacology Jul 22, 2018
Samagh N, et al. - Researchers investigated the postoperative analgesic efficacy of pre-emptive analgesia with a single caudal epidural injection of ropivacaine among patients undergoing lumbosacral spine surgeries by the posterior approach. They focused on the quality and duration of pain relief and intraoperative opioid requirement for patients randomized to ropivacaine (R) group (n = 40) vs saline (S) group (n = 40). They used visual analogue scale (VAS) scale and monitored patients in the immediate postoperative period and at 4, 8, 12, and 24 hours for pain. Findings proved the safety as well as the efficacy of pre-emptive analgesia with caudal epidural injection of ropivacaine as a method of postoperative analgesia.
