Practice and bias in intraoperative pain management: Results of a cross-sectional patient study and a survey of anesthesiologists
Journal of Pain Research Mar 28, 2018
Ward S, et al. - In view of the persistently high prevalence of postoperative pain, researchers planned a prospective cross-sectional study of patients in the Postanesthetic Care Unit (PACU) and a survey of anesthesiologists to evaluate practice and uncover bias in intraoperative pain management. They noted that in PACU, a high prevalence of pain was there. Conservative intraoperative analgesic administration by anesthesiologists was also observed. In addition, bias in current intraoperative pain management was suggested by the modest morphine usage and overreliance on local anesthetic application, which are not supported by published evidence.
