Posttraumatic stress disorder and mortality in VA patients with implantable cardioverter-defibrillators
Clinical Cardiology May 26, 2018
Ofman P, et al. - Experts evaluated the relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mortality in patients who underwent implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) placement in US veterans, presuming that PTSD in veterans with ICD is associated with increased mortality. Findings suggested that almost 13% among more than 25,000 veterans undergoing ICD implantation had a diagnosis of PTSD. Nonetheless, the subjects with PTSD were significantly younger, a higher incidence of coronary heart disease, major cardiac comorbidities, cancer, and mental health conditions was seen in the subjects with PTSD. Presence of PTSD before or after ICD implantation was not associated with incident death when adjusting for all covariates.
