Postsurgical prescriptions for opioid naive patients and association with overdose and misuse: Retrospective cohort study
BMJ Jan 24, 2018
Brat GA, et al. - This research encompassed a quantification of the effects of varying opioid prescribing patterns on the dependence, overdose or abuse following surgery, in an opioid naive cohort. A link was revealed between each refill and week of the opioid prescription with a large increase in opioid misuse among opioid-naive patients. It was inferred that the duration of the prescription rather than dosage exhibited a strong correlation with the ultimate misuse in the early postsurgical period. Hence, the connection between prescribing choices on opioid misuse was quantified and researchers determined the levers for possible impact.
