Postpartum depression among women with preeclampsia and eclampsia in Tanzania; A call for integrative intervention
BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth Aug 04, 2019
Mbarak B, Kilewo C, Kuganda S, et al. - Researchers investigated 390 women diagnosed with preeclampsia or eclampsia at Muhimbili National Hospital, Tanzania for the degree of and risk factors for postpartum depression (PPD). In this cross-sectional study, they appraised PPD using Edinburg postnatal depression scoring scale. Among 20.5% of these women PPD was prevalent, but with varying severity. PPD was noted in correlation to young age, being a single mother, having a lower level of education, having a perinatal death, lack of family support, and a stressful event during pregnancy. In order to address PPD, they recommend screening and offering treatment to pregnant women presenting with preeclampsia or eclampsia, particularly those at risk.
