Postpartum complications increased in women with polycystic ovary syndrome
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Sep 16, 2020
Alur-Gupta S, Boland MR, Barnhart KT, et al. - Via this retrospective cohort study among women with and without polycystic ovary syndrome aged 18 to 50 years, researchers examined the risk of postpartum cardiovascular disease complications and perinatal and postpartum depression. They assessed 42,391 unique women with polycystic ovary syndrome and 795,480 women without polycystic ovary syndrome. In this large United States cohort study, women with polycystic ovary syndrome are noted to be at raised risk of both cardiovascular and psychiatric complications during the postpartum period. Nonobese women with polycystic ovary syndrome were noted to be at higher risk of postpartum eclampsia, peripartum cardiomyopathy, and cerebrovascular accidents than nonobese women without polycystic ovary syndrome. Based on observations, they suggest recognizing polycystic ovary syndrome as an at-risk condition; they underscore the requirement for routine screening and early interventions for these major comorbidities.
