Postoperative weightbearing following ankle arthrodesis: A systematic review
The Bone & Joint Journal Oct 11, 2019
Potter MJ, et al. - A total of 60 studies with 2,426 ankles were involved in a systematic review in order to ascertain the evidence for weightbearing recommendations after ankle arthrodesis and to contrast outcomes amongst various regimens. Qualified studies were classified according to the term of postoperative non-weightbearing ie, zero to one week (group A), two to three weeks (group B), four to five weeks (group C), or six weeks or more (group D). For groups A to D, mean union rates were 93.2%, 95.5%, 93.0%, and 93.0%; the mean time to union was 10.4 weeks, 14.5 weeks, 12.4 weeks, and 14.4 weeks; and the mean complication rates were 22.3%, 23.0%, 27.1%, and 28.7% respectively. It was found that outcomes after ankle arthrodesis seemed to be comparable irrespective of the term of postoperative non-weightbearing, however, the existing literature was inadequate to arrive at comprehensive results.
