Postoperative uvular necrosis: A case series and literature review
The Laryngoscope Jun 05, 2019
Reid JW, et al. - Via performing this comprehensive review of retrospective case series of postoperative uvular necrosis, researchers sought to identify risk factors and potential causes for this complication. They reviewed four cases of postoperative uvular necrosis diagnosed clinically at their institution and 26 reports and seven case series identified in the comprehensive literature review, totaling 53 cases of this complication. Outcomes suggest a possible role of impingement with various devices and vascular trauma from suction in postoperative uvular necrosis. Male oropharyngeal anatomy may be a risk factor. However, this complication could not be predicted with either the type of instrumentation or the type of procedure. A uvular injury could be prevented by proper positioning of the patient and instruments and minimizing suction force.
