Postoperative urinary retention after inguinal hernia repair: A single institution experience
Hernia Sep 11, 2017
Blair AB, et al. - Authors in this single institution series investigated if patient comorbidities, surgical approaches, and anesthesia methods are associated with developing postoperative urinary retention (PUR) after inguinal hernia repairs. Findings revealed an association of patient age, history of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and bilateral repair with PUR after inguinal hernia repair. There appeared no association of PUR with laparoscopic vs open approach. Older males seemed at higher risk without intraoperative bladder decompression, and therefore, catheter placement should be considered in this population, regardless of surgical approach.
