Postoperative tight glycemic control significantly reduces postoperative infection rates in patients undergoing surgery: A meta-analysis
BMC Endocrine Disorders Jun 30, 2018
Wang YY, et al. - All randomized controlled trials evaluating the benefits of postoperative tight glycemic control (TGC) as compared to conventional glycemic control (CGC) in patients undergoing surgery were retrieves via searching the EMBASE, MEDLINE, and the Cochrane Library databases. Outcomes suggested significantly reduces total postoperative infection rates and short-term mortality in association with TGC immediately after surgery. However, this finding might limit conclusion regarding the efficacy of TGC for short-term mortality in sensitivity analyses. A significantly higher rate of postoperative hypoglycemia observed among patients in the TGC group suggest administering TGC under close glucose monitoring in patients undergoing surgery. This should be considered especially in those with high postoperative infection risk.
