Postoperative shed autologous blood reinfusion does not decrease the need for allogeneic blood transfusion in unilateral and bilateral total knee arthroplasty
PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Jul 15, 2019
Miao Y, et al. - Researchers sought to assess the efficacy of postoperative shed autologous blood reinfusion techniques that have been used for decades in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). In this multicenter retrospective study, the medical records of patients who underwent unilateral and bilateral TKA were retrieved and division of the patients into the control group and the shed autologous blood reinfusion group was done according to whether postoperative shed autologous blood reinfusion was used. Findings revealed no reduction in the necessity for infusing allogeneic red blood cells in correlation to shed autologous blood reinfusion. Further, the patient incurred higher expenses and had an extended postoperative hospital stay in correlation to the procedure.
