Postoperative radiotherapy provides better local control and long-term outcome in selective cases of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma with perineural invasion
Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology Oct 11, 2019
Cañueto J, Jaka A, Corchete LA, et al. - In this retrospective multicenter cohort study, researchers measured postoperative radiotherapy (PORT)'s effectiveness in treating cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC) with perineural invasion (PNI) in order to determine which patients will benefit most from this type of treatment. One hundred ten CSCCs with PNI was assessed. According to findings, using PORT in patients with CSCC with PNI and positive postoperative margins, particularly in PNI ≥ 0.1 mm, significantly improves long-term outcome. For cases with clear margins, the advantage of PORT is not as apparent, particularly in those with PNI of small-caliber nerves. There is a need for clinical trials.
