Postoperative pulmonary complications in the morbidly obese: The role of tidal volume and type of abdominal surgery
Respiratory Care Dec 02, 2020
Guerra-Londono CE, et al. - Among individuals who were morbidly obese and undergoing abdominal surgery, this inquiry was performed to determine the link between tidal volume (VT) adjusted for ideal body weight (IBW) and the development of postoperative pulmonary complications, as well as its implications on intraoperative ventilatory variables. This analysis involved 734 persons with a BMI of at least 40 kg/m2, receiving open or laparoscopic abdominal surgery that lasted for at least 120 min. An independent protective factor against postoperative pulmonary complications was laparoscopic surgery, as revealed in multivariate analysis. Overall, among morbidly obese persons who were undergoing prolonged abdominal surgery, there was no link between VT/IBW and the development of postoperative pulmonary complications.
