Postoperative pain treatment with erector spinae plane block and pectoralis nerve blocks in patients undergoing mitral/tricuspid valve repair — A randomized controlled trial
BMC Anesthesiology Mar 04, 2020
Gawęda B, Borys B, Belina B, et al. - Researchers compared patients undergoing cardiac surgery with erector spinae plane (ESP) block vs combined ESP and pectoralis nerve (PECS) blocks for postoperative pain intensity. In this prospective, randomized, controlled, double-blinded study, they included 30 patients who underwent mitral/tricuspid valve repair via mini-thoracotomy at a tertiary hospital. They randomly assigned patients to either of the following two groups: ESP or PECS + ESP group (1:1 randomization). In both groups, a single-shot, ultrasound-guided ESP block was provided to patients; participants in PECS + ESP group received PECS blocks in addition. As per outcomes, there was a reduction in the consumption of oxycodone via patient-controlled analgesia, a reduction in pain intensity on the visual analog scale, and an increase in patient satisfaction with pain management in patients undergoing mitral/tricuspid valve repair via mini-thoracotomy when PECS blocks were added to ESP.
