Postoperative pain control and opioid usage patterns among patients undergoing thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy
Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Oct 20, 2018
Tharakan T, et al. - Authors evaluated the opioid-prescribing patterns following endocrine surgery and the factors related to postoperative pain and opioid use. Participants were 209 patients who had total thyroidectomy, hemithyroidectomy, or parathyroidectomy between August 2015 and November 2017. Experts noted that, for endocrine surgery, often opioids were prescribed in excess. Pain can be more adequately treated and excess opioid prescriptions can limited by using an ideal pill number and understanding predictors of postoperative pain. An association of older age with lower odds of opioid use and lower pain scores was noted on multivariable analyses.
