Postoperative outcomes of patients with nonperforated gangrenous appendicitis: A national multicenter prospective cohort analysis
Diseases of the Colon and Rectum Oct 16, 2019
de Wijkerslooth EML, de Jonge J, van den Boom AL, et al. - Researchers conducted a national multicenter observational study at 62 Dutch hospitals including 1,863 patients with nonperforated gangrenous appendicitis in order to estimate the rate of postoperative infectious complications and the effect of postoperative antibiotic use among these cases. Among the patients, 1,321 (70.9%) were diagnosed with phlegmonous appendicitis, 181 (9.7%) with gangrenous appendicitis, and 361 (19.4%) with perforated appendicitis. As per findings, a higher risk of infectious complications was observed among patients with nonperforated gangrenous appendicitis vs those with phlegmonous appendicitis, yet the gangrenous disease is not an independent risk factor. They identified no correlation of postoperative antibiotic use over 24 hours with reduced infectious complications.
