Postoperative outcomes after index vs interval cholecystectomy for perforated cholecystitis
Journal of the American College of Surgeons Feb 19, 2021
Krecko LK, Gomez TH, Scarborough JE, et al. - Patients with perforated cholecystitis who underwent cholecystectomy at the time of index hospital admission were compared with those who underwent interval cholecystectomy with respect to their outcomes. Researchers conducted a retrospective analysis of 654 patients from the ACS NSQIP database who underwent cholecystectomy for perforated cholecystitis (2006-2018). Findings revealed significantly longer postoperative hospitalizations and higher 30-day postoperative major morbidity and mortality among patients who underwent index cholecystectomy. No differences were observed in 30-day minor morbidity. Operative management on an interval, rather than urgent, basis may benefit selected patients with perforated cholecystitis.
