Postoperative opioid consumption after total hip arthroplasty: A comparison of three surgical approaches
Journal of Arthroplasty Oct 19, 2019
Seah S, et al. - A total of 560 individuals were involved in this retrospective cohort study (335 females and 225 males) evaluating patient demographics (age, gender, and BMI), American Society of Anesthesiologists grade, opioid naivety, operative details (anesthetic method, fixation method, and local infiltration analgesia), pain scores, and length of stay in order to examine postoperative pain and subsequent opioid intake between surgical procedures (anterior—AA, lateral—LA, and posterior—PA) in those who underwent primary elective THA. The cohort comprised of 179 AA, 178 LA, and 203 PA individuals. In the early postoperative period, the direct anterior approach was related to lower daily opioid use and pain scores following elective THA. This shows a possible 21% decrease, in daily opioid dose, in comparison with LA individuals, and 18.7% decrease in individuals with PA.
