Postoperative mortality of indigenous populations compared with nonindigenous populations

JAMA Surgery May 12, 2020

McLeod M, Signal V, Gurney J, et al. - Postoperative mortality experiences were examined for minority indigenous populations vs nonindigenous populations via performing a systematic review of 21 articles and 7 reports. All included studies were cohort studies (3 prospective and the remainder retrospective) examining a great variety of surgical procedures in the US, Australia, or New Zealand. Seven studies were from single facilities, whereas the remainder employed data from national databases. Findings revealed mixed experiences concerning the postoperative mortality among minority indigenous populations vs nonindigenous populations. As per several studies, there is higher likelihood of death following cardiac procedures among indigenous populations, but the available evidence has poor study quality, including poor recognition of indigeneity.
