Postoperative memory prognosis in temporal lobe epilepsy surgery: The contribution of postictal memory
Epilepsia Jul 28, 2019
Sveikata L, et al. - Given that, at an individual level, the prediction of verbal memory decline after temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) surgery is difficult, researchers assessed the prognostic ability of postictal memory testing in anticipating postoperative verbal memory function. Participants in the study were 63 consecutive patients who had TLE surgery with preoperative interictal/postictal and postoperative memory testing. Using the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT), verbal memory was assessed. Findings suggested that postictal memory is a non-invasive bedside memory test that can help anticipate a decrease in verbal postoperative memory in hippocampal sclerosis patients with an overall precision of 81%.
