Postoperative intensive care unit admission after elective non-cardiac surgery: A single-center analysis of the NSQIP database
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Nov 19, 2019
Bruceta M, et al. - By analyzing data from the ACS NSQIP database at a tertiary care academic medical center, researchers investigated perioperative factors related to ICU admission after operation in patients undergoing elective non-cardiac surgery. They evaluated the link with postoperative ICU admission by conducting univariable and multivariable logistic regression of patient and surgery-specific traits. There were 5,254 database patient records, among these, the eligible were 1,150. A longer hospital length of stay, had a higher frequency of readmission, re-operation and in-hospital mortality was observed in patients who were admitted to the ICU following surgery. Patients undergoing elective non-cardiac surgery were commonly admitted to the ICU after the operation. In these patients, predictors of postoperative ICU admissions were elevated BMI, longer duration of surgery and disseminated cancer.
