Postoperative infection risk in total joint arthroplasty following perioperative IV corticosteroid administration; A systematic review and meta- analysis of comparative studies

Journal of Arthroplasty Apr 14, 2021

Feeley A, Feeley T, Feeley I, et al. - Although studies described the correlation of perioperative corticosteroid administration with decreased postoperative nausea, pain, and enhanced recovery following surgery, surgeons remained concerned about potential complications including wound and periprosthetic joint infections (PJI) following total joint arthroplasty (TJA). The initial search strategy into databases PubMed; google scholar; and EMBASE yielded 201 studies; 29 of these were included for review following application of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Findings seemed not correlating use of perioperative corticosteroid in total joint arthroplasty with raised risk of postoperative infection in patients with limited co-morbidities.
