Postoperative infection risk in total joint arthroplasty after perioperative iv corticosteroid administration: A systematic review and meta-analysis of comparative studies

Journal of Arthroplasty May 04, 2021

Feeley AA, Feeley TB, Feeley IH, et al. - A systematic review and meta-analysis of comparative studies were conducted to evaluate the postoperative infection risk in total joint arthroplasty after perioperative iv corticosteroid administration. Researchers carried out searches of PubMed, Google Scholar, and EMBASE in January 2021 to distinguish comparative studies assessing infection risk after perioperative corticosteroid administration in total joint arthroplasty (TJA). They used PRISMA guidelines for this review. They used meta-analysis to evaluate infection risk in accordance with joint and corticosteroid dosing regimens used. After the initial search strategy, 201 studies were returned, with 29 included for review after application of inclusion and exclusion criteria. In patients with limited comorbidities, the use of perioperative corticosteroid in TJA does not seem to be correlated with an elevated risk of postoperative infection. Future study is needed to assess postoperative complications after TJA in these at-risk patient populations.
